Surgery performed to remove compression from nerve roots or the spinal cord. This type of surgery can be considered when neurologic compression causes severe / treatment resistant pain or neurologic deficits.

Quick Facts:

  • Surgery to remove bone and / or soft tissue from nerve roots or spinal cord
  • Great treatment if symptoms are refractory to other less invasive options
  • Modern techniques are often minimally invasive
  • The goal is to relieve symptoms and restore function

WHAT IS DECOMPRESSION SURGERY?

Decompression refers to surgery that removes pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots inside of the spine.

Compression may occur in a variety of locations

  • Center of the spinal canal (central canal)
  • In the lateral gutter inside the spinal canal (lateral recess)
  • In the hole where the nerve root leaves the spine (neural foramen)

πŸ‘‰ The most important step is identifying what problem needs to be treated

WHY IS DECOMPRESSION USED?

  • Central canal stenosis (compressing either the spinal cord or the traversing nerve roots)
  • Lateral canal stenosis (compressing the traversing (passing) nerve root)
  • Neural foraminal stenosis (compressing the exiting nerve root)

πŸ‘‰ The goal is to remove pressure to relieve symptoms

WHO IS A CANDIDATE?

Patients may be candidates if:

  • They have spinal cord compression
  • They have nerve root compression

Instrumentation is not used for every spine surgery. It is used when extra support is necessary.
